Project Description:
Well No. 3 was originally drilled in 1981 at the corner of 62nd Avenue and Deer Street with a rated production capacity of 2,000 gpm. The well was drilled for the Department of Natural Resources and was later transferred over to the City of West Richland in 1985 for use as a domestic water source.
The well produced at a rate of 750 gpm when originally transferred to the City and produced at a rate of 1,300 gpm with a larger pump installed. The well has experienced sand-pumping problems since drilled and increased intensity when pumping at the higher rate. In 2001 the well was improved by deepening it 75 feet; removing the inner liner, perforating the remaining casing, and installing a well screen and filter pack. In 2012, the well experienced aesthetic taste and odor issues along with reduced capacity. The pump had not been operating since 2012.
In November 2021, the City hired a hydrogeologist whose recommendation was to: 1) abandon the existing Well, 2) drill a new well, and 3) construct a new well building and disinfection system.
